How this works in a running school

GPA looks like a simple average and is, in practice, a policy decision expressed as arithmetic. Whether a subject is weighted by credit hours, whether a resit replaces or averages with the original attempt, whether non-academic subjects count, and how a withdrawal is treated all change the number. Two schools with identical marks can report different GPAs entirely legitimately.

This means the software question is whether your policy can be configured rather than whether GPA is supported. A platform with a fixed calculation will produce a number that disagrees with your published policy, and the discrepancy will surface when a parent or a receiving institution checks it.

What to check when evaluating it

Whether the calculation weights subjects by credit or treats them equally, and whether that is configurable.
How a resit or repeated assessment is treated: replacement, averaging, or both recorded.
Whether cumulative and term GPA are both available.
Which subjects are included, and whether that can be set per programme.
Whether the calculation is recorded with the result so historical GPAs remain reproducible.

What it costs to get wrong

A GPA that disagrees with your published policy is a credibility problem rather than a rounding error. Parents recalculate, receiving institutions query the figure, and the school ends up explaining that the software computes it differently from the handbook. Correcting the calculation later means restating GPAs already issued, including on documents sent externally. Because the arithmetic encodes policy decisions about weighting and resits, confirming that those are configurable is more important than confirming GPA is supported.

GPA and percentage average
