Marking begins only after a paper is published. Paper publication creates or reuses a linked FINAL assessment with PUBLISHED status and seeds an assessment-mark row for every active student in the paper’s class. The marker works from /exam-papers/my-marking-tasks or the linked gradebook surface, records scores or an exam-day absence, and should resolve the roster before asking the committee to freeze marks. The paper’s mark freeze and the assessment rows’ frozen fields then protect ordinary edits.
Moderation is a coordinator action on a published paper and produces a moderation log with the operation and affected rows. Results publication is session-level, not the same as publishing a paper: the route requires at least one published paper, blocks missing marks unless incomplete marking is acknowledged, and also blocks when required class-teacher sign-offs are absent. It builds or rebuilds SessionGradeCard rows, freezes remaining published-paper marks, and notifies students and parents.
Keep the two result surfaces separate when checking completion. The linked assessment supports marker entry and can flow into ordinary gradebook/report-card data, while SessionGradeCard is the formal session snapshot for /my-exams and /parent-dashboard/exams. A successful paper publish therefore does not mean families can see results; the session still needs its own governed publication step.
Usage workflow
- Markers use /exam-papers/my-marking-tasks (or Grades) - enter scores per script.
- The committee chair freezes marks per paper when ready; publish-results also auto-freezes remaining published papers.
- If class-teacher sign-off is required, each class acknowledges on /my-class/exams.
- The committee chair publishes results - this builds session grade cards; students see them at /my-exams and parents at /parent-dashboard/exams?childId=.

What does freezing marks prevent?+
A frozen paper’s mark rows and exam-day absentee records can no longer be edited through ordinary marking or roll-call actions. The committee can unfreeze through the authorised paper action, while a completed revaluation is the supported path for an approved revised mark.
Why does result publication report missing marks after marking started?+
The completeness check compares the active roster of each published paper’s class against the students who have an assessment-mark row, so it catches candidates who joined after the paper was published rather than blank scores - paper publication seeds a row for everyone active at that moment. Acknowledging incomplete marks lets publish proceed. Class-teacher sign-off has no equivalent override: every required class must acknowledge first.
How do teachers enter exam marks and publish results?+
Markers use /exam-papers/my-marking-tasks or /grades. Committee reviews moderation, freezes marks, then publishes results to SessionGradeCards. Parents see published results only.
