An assessment is a single piece of work for one class and one subject, with a type, a date, a maximum mark, and an optional weightage. Marks are stored per student against that assessment, each with a status of present, absent, or exempt, plus an optional comment. Weightage matters later: the master view of the gradebook combines every published assessment for a subject into a weighted percentage rather than showing raw scores.

Scoping follows teaching assignments for the active academic year. A teacher may create and mark an assessment for a class and subject they are assigned to, or for any subject in a class where they are the class teacher. Leadership bypasses class scope entirely.

Two gradebook views

Exam mode shows the most recent published assessment per subject, filtered by assessment type or by a named exam set
Master mode combines every published assessment per subject into a weighted percentage and a per-student total
Both read the active class roster, so a student added mid-term appears with empty cells rather than being omitted

Handoff

Marks entered here are the raw material for two different documents. Term report cards assemble published assessment marks for the term and are released to families by leadership. Exam session grade cards assemble marks from published exam papers and are released from the exam session. An assessment linked to an exam paper therefore serves both, which is exactly why the exam workflow freezes it once results are out.

Why does a subject teacher get a 403 on the class gradebook?+

The cross-subject class gradebook is limited to leadership and to the class teacher or co-class teacher. A subject teacher can view and mark their own assessments for that class but not the whole grid, because it exposes every subject.

An assessment I created is not showing in the gradebook.+

The gradebook only reads assessments with status PUBLISHED. Drafts stay private to mark entry, so publish the assessment once the marks are ready to appear in the grid.

Mark entry returns 423 Locked. What does that mean?+

That assessment is linked to an exam paper whose marks have been frozen, or the exam session has been archive-frozen. Unfreeze from the exam session, or the marks stay read-only.

Can I enter a mark above the maximum?+

No. Saving is rejected with an error naming the student and the maximum for the assessment. Raise maxMarks on the assessment first if the paper really was out of more.
