Schoolyi never hard-deletes student or staff user rows through the UI. Deactivation sets isActive=false and preserves historical fees, attendance, and grades.

Student deactivate workflow

  1. Principal or Platform Admin opens /students/[id].
  2. Choose Deactivate - system sets user inactive, drops active class enrollment, waives pending fee instances.
  3. Issue transfer certificate at /students/certificates if required.
  4. To reactivate: use Re-enroll on the profile (POST /api/students/[id]/re-enroll) - pick class; review fee policy after reactivation.

Staff deactivate workflow

  1. Clear blockers first: class teacher / co-class teacher roles, active teacher assignments (feed the timetable), and future exam invigilation.
  2. Deactivate at /school-staff/[id] - API returns 400 listing remaining dependencies if blocked.
  3. Reactivate via staff profile when the employee returns.
