Homework setup and usage

Homework is an assignment workflow, separate from the gradebook. A teacher creates an assignment for one class and subject with a title, due date, description, optional maximum marks and optional attachments. The API checks that the teacher has an active assignment for that class and subject; privileged school roles may create homework on behalf of another teacher. New assignments are unpublished by default, which lets staff prepare the instructions before students can see them.

Students submit text or files from the assignment view, and teachers grade the submission with marks and optional feedback. A late submission remains identifiable as late; the system does not apply an automatic mark penalty. Homework marks and feedback stay on the assignment submission and are not added to term report-card totals. If work should count as continuous assessment, create a separate gradebook Assessment at /grades.

Use publication as the handoff point: unpublished instructions remain staff-only, while a published assignment is available to the relevant student roster. Parents use /parent-dashboard/homework for a linked child rather than the teacher workspace. Keep the due date and class-subject pairing accurate before publishing, because those fields drive the student list, submission context and reminder query.

Setup workflow

1. Teachers need active class-subject assignments.
2. Arrange for the school’s scheduled job to invoke the due-reminder route; the route also supports a manual staff-triggered run.
3. POST /api/homework-assignments/due-reminders/run checks published assignments due within the next 24 hours and creates in-app reminders for students who have not submitted.

Usage workflow

• Teacher: /assignments → New → due date, attachments, class-subject; publish so students see it.
• Student: submit before due date; late submission follows school practice.
• Teacher: grade and optional comment - visible on the student assignment view.
• Reminders: only published assignments; deduped so students are not spammed daily.
