Curriculum is the first academic module to set up in a new year, before the timetable and long before a paper is written. A syllabus row is unique per class, subject and academic year, so the year has to exist first and a duplicate is rejected rather than merged. Everything downstream reads that one row: weekly lesson plans, the period map the timetable generator uses, the topic list an exam blueprint snapshots, and what a learner sees on their portal.

Pacing is the step that most often goes wrong. Generating lesson plans does not divide topics evenly by calendar week. It walks the academic calendar day by day, discards individual holidays, seasonal holidays and weekend days, groups what is left into Monday-start instructional weeks, and gives each week a share of the topics proportional to its working days. A term with a two-week break therefore produces fewer plans on its own. Generate the calendar at /academic-calendar first, or the request is refused for having no instructional days.

Who owns what

Platform Admin, Principal, Vice Principal and Admin may edit any syllabus, generate plans for every teacher at once, and approve or reject a plan.
A teacher may edit the syllabus for a class they are assigned to or homeroom, write and generate their own plans, and upload materials - but not approve a plan or generate for someone else.
Students see /my-syllabus and materials for their grade, never lesson plans. Parents see the same for a linked child, and nothing about teaching progress.

Handoff and limits

Curriculum feeds examinations rather than the reverse: an exam paper blueprint snapshots the chosen topics into its own record and keeps a reference to the source syllabus, so a later curriculum edit cannot rewrite a locked blueprint. It also feeds the timetable through the period map. It does not feed the gradebook - coverage and plan status are teaching records and no mark derives from them. Syllabus content has no version history of its own, coverage is tracked per teacher, and a material saved without narrowing reaches the whole grade.

Can one class have two syllabi for the same subject?+

No. The row is unique per class, subject and academic year, and creating a duplicate is rejected. Open the existing row at /syllabus/[id] and edit its chapters, or create next year first and build the new syllabus there.

Why did generating lesson plans produce nothing for one subject?+

Generation skips a class-subject whose syllabus has no chapters and reports it as skipped rather than failing, so a partial run is easy to miss. The other two causes are louder: no calendar days for the year, and no active teacher assignment matching the filters.

Does marking a topic complete change anything in the gradebook?+

No. Coverage is a teaching record. It moves the progress figure on the syllabus checklist and is also advanced when a linked lesson plan is marked completed, but no assessment, mark or report card reads it.
