Attendance runs every teaching day from the first week of term and has no setup phase of its own - it works as soon as classes have homeroom staff and active memberships. Access is deliberately narrow: the register follows classTeacherId and coClassTeacherId on the class record, edited at /classes, and nothing else. Giving a teacher a subject assignment does not let them mark that class, which is the most common misunderstanding here.
The number families see is present days over marked days, not present days over working days. A day nobody marked is absent from the arithmetic entirely; it is never counted as an absence. Class reports show a separate unmarked column, and that column is the only place the academic calendar enters the calculation - it counts working days in the range and subtracts the days that carry a mark. Sync holidays at /academic-calendar or that figure overstates the gap.

Marking the register
- Open /attendance; class and today’s date are preselected. Students and parents who reach this route are redirected to their own portal.
- Mark each student Present, Absent or Late with an optional remark. One record exists per student, class, date and session, so a repeat save is refused as a duplicate rather than overwriting.
- Marking Absent notifies linked parents in-app, and by email when that channel is on, deep-linked to the child’s attendance page.
- Load historical rows from CSV: date as yyyy-MM-dd, studentId, a status of PRESENT, ABSENT or LATE, and an optional session that defaults to FULL_DAY. Up to 2000 rows, and every student must already be an active member of the chosen class.
What breaks if you skip a step
- Homeroom staff not set: the teacher opens /attendance and sees no classes, with no error to explain it.
- Holidays not synced: the unmarked column counts festival days as missing entries.
- Wrong session used: MORNING and FULL_DAY are separate records for one day and both count.
Handoff and limits
The register hands off to the term report card, which counts full-day records inside the term dates, and to the family portals. It reads nothing from leave, so approved student leave still needs the day marked. There is no biometric or card integration, nothing back-fills a missed day, and Late is reported separately but does not count as present.

A subject teacher was added to the class but still cannot open the register. Why?+
Attendance access comes from classTeacherId and coClassTeacherId on the class record at /classes, not from teacher subject assignments. Adding an assignment grants gradebook and timetable access for that class-subject and nothing else. Set the teacher as class or co-class teacher if they should take the register.
Does an unmarked day count against a student’s attendance percentage?+
No. The percentage is present records divided by records that exist, so a day with no register entry does not appear on either side of the fraction. Class reports show unmarked days as a separate column, derived from academic-calendar working days minus the days that carry a mark, so the gap is visible without distorting the percentage.
Can period attendance correct a wrong homeroom mark?+
No. If a full-day homeroom record already exists for that student and date, saving a period mark is rejected with a homeroom-conflict error. Fix the daily mark on /attendance instead. Period rows are also excluded from the default report scope, so they never quietly change a published figure.
What does approved student leave do to the register?+
Nothing. Leave and attendance are separate records by design: an approved request records an expected absence and notifies the family, but the homeroom teacher still marks the day. Report card attendance is counted from register marks alone, so leave never improves or worsens it.
