Publishing events and news
Create the event once on the academic calendar, mark it public with a slug from the website admin, and know which collection to use for news instead.

Schoolyi deliberately keeps one source of truth for dates. A sports day, a parent-teacher meeting, or a founders day is created once on the academic calendar, where it also flows into the day records that scheduling reads. Publishing it to the website is a second, smaller decision: mark it public and give it a slug so it has a stable address.
That split is why the website events screen has so few controls. It shows the calendar entries eligible for publication and lets you toggle visibility and generate a slug from the title. Everything else about the event - the title, dates, location, and description - is edited where the event lives.
Choosing the right collection
| Content | Create it in | Appears at |
|---|---|---|
| Something happening on a date | /events on the academic calendar | The public events list and its own event page |
| A story with images and body text | /school-website/blogs | The public blog list and post page |
| A short dated announcement | /school-website/announcements | The home feed and the public notice board |
| A photo set from an event | /school-website/gallery | The public gallery album |
| An internal message to signed-in families | /notices | The in-app notice feed, not the public site |
Publishing an event
- Create the event at /events with a type of Event, Milestone, or Other, plus dates and a location
- Open /school-website/events and find it in the list
- Toggle it public and generate a slug, or type one, so the event gets its own address
- Confirm it on the public events page, and add photographs to a gallery album afterwards
Limits
One event can therefore appear in three places for three audiences: on the academic calendar for staff, on the public site for prospective families, and in an internal notice for families who already have an account. Decide which of those you actually need before creating the same date three times.
- There is no public RSS feed for events or blog posts
- Ticketing and attendee caps are stored on the event record but there is no public booking flow
- Marking an event public does not notify anyone; it changes what the website shows and nothing else
Common questions
Quick answers in plain language.
Where do I create an event that should appear on the website?+
On the academic calendar, at /events. The website events screen at /school-website/events does not create anything - it lists existing calendar events and lets you mark one public and give it a slug.
Which calendar entries can be made public?+
Only entries whose type is Event, Milestone, or Other. Holidays, exams, and term boundaries are calendar mechanics and never appear in the public events list, even if you would like them to.
My event is marked public but is not on the site.+
Check three things: the event is still active and not deleted, its end date has not already passed since the public list only shows upcoming entries, and the event has a slug if you expect its own detail page to resolve.
Should a news story be an event?+
No. Use a blog post for a story with a cover image and body text, and an announcement for a short, dated, optionally pinned notice on the home feed. Events are for things that happen on a date.
